Dear Shadowy Vicky: Film Noir
I’ve been a bit flaky with my posts recently. I’m trying to work out a less frequent posting schedule, but before I come up with anything, please excuse me for my flakiness.
During the pandemic, taking my cameras on long walks became a coping mechanism that worked wonders for me. It kept me sane, more than anything else. Up till then I hadn’t really had many opportunities to concentrate on taking photos in Hong Kong. I was always on my way to a place and happened to have my camera on me, so I snapped a photo here and there. Destinations are the enemy of photography. The newfound time gave me the opportunity to look closely at the city I called home, and photograph things that I would’ve otherwise missed.
Because I was walking a lot, I shot a lot of people on the sidewalks. And when the lighting is right, Hong Kong’s marvellous canvas for lights and shadows. Here’s a few photos from the west end of the Hong Kong island. I might make this into a series, so more are coming.
I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here
And scene! Thanks for reading/looking/scrolling through! Come back soon!

You're exactly right: Destinations are the enemy of photography.
Several years ago, I joined a photography group in HK and we would meet on a Sunday every month or so. We did have a destination of sorts, like let's head to a pub in a particular district, but other than that, you had 2-3 hours vaguely wandering in the right direction. I loved it because a) I got to explore new areas, b) I took photos of stuff that I wouldn't normally see, and c) I didn't overthink about what I was taking photos of.
Unfortunately, the group disbanded with the pandemic ruining everything!
Love these, that lighting is wild!
