Dear Vicky: Ding Ding! Tram Coming Through
The tram on Hong Kong Island is one of my favourite rides. Screw those ugly tour buses. If you want to see Hong Kong island, the tram is the best way to go. And it only costs a fraction of any other means of transportation you’ll find in Hong Kong. For most of my years it cost 2.3 Hong Kong dollars to ride the tram from the west end of Hong Kong island to the east. That’s 30 cents US.
The tram started in 1904, which was pretty cool to me. Just like the Star Ferry, the tram went through different designs. The company even restored a couple of the old trams and turned them into party trams for hire. The trams are airconditioningless-I just made up a word-, which, in a city that abuses ACs, is a breath of fresh air.
I’ll stop boring you with words. Here are some photos I shot over the years.
And you are welcome.
I’ve posted this photo before, but I think it deserves to be here.

The tram can go pretty fast, especially late at night. Every once in a while, you’d see news about trams tipping over. It usually happens at night when the drivers try out the Formula 1 mode.
And that concludes my tram post! Thank you for coming along! I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride. Au revoir!

Great pictures. I'm happy to admit that when I'm in Hong Kong I'm like a kid, rushing up the stairs to see if I can snag the front seat and enjoy the view. I also have visions of being a spy and passing top secret documents through the window to my contact on the passing tram just inches away.
I can hear them, as I read your post and look at the great photographs! Thank you!
