Dear Vicky: I'm Feeling Unlucky
Happy New Year’s Eve!
It’s been a bumpy end to 2025. I lost my phone about two weeks ago, and yesterday, I lost my light metre. The kicker was I cannot get a new light metre in time before I leave Hong Kong, where one can get anything at anytime. I guess that’s my 2025 in a nutshell. I hope you’ve had a better 2025.
It’s the last day of 2025, and we are staying in our temporary home to avoid the craziness that is Hong Kong. I’ve done my 2025 clip post already, but I thought I should post something today to wrap the year up.
Lucky Film had been around for decades when I was growing up. I knew it existed, but I’ve never shot any of its offerings. At the time Kodak and Fujifilm were the go-to films, even for me, the film-illiterate. And now, Lucky Film has resurrected, and started producing films again, I’ve got to try it, obviously. I bought a roll of ISO100 black and white, and I am posting some of the shots from that roll. After going through the scans on my computer, I couldn’t quite see myself shooting it more in the future. The stock feels kind of rudimentary. Maybe it’ll improve over time. I am not gonna waste more of your NYE time.
This one could’ve been my favourite from the roll, but I messed up the focus juggling the camera and a fussy toddle on a moving tram. And we’ve got an abstract mess.
Through the tram window.
街道仁義, roughly translated Street ethics, a term from the Japanese street racers.
Reflection on a tram.
Causeway Bay crossing.
Wan Chai.
Tram window.
Walkers.
North Point.
Cyclist racing the tram.
Tram passengers.
A meeting of three trams.
Oh the classic dilemma known in Hong Kong as caught between a tram and an electric street car on rails.
That’s it for today, and that’s it for 2025! Happy New Year to you all!

The images seem to have nice contrast and dynamic range. Did you have to do a lot of post processing on the scans to get that look? I was surprised you said that you didn’t like the film stock after seeing the way the images look.
I’m also with Tim, haha. Curious what brought you to that conclusion. Regardless, your shots are all on point as usual and I think the films dynamics and contrast suit your style really well.
