Dear Vicky: It’s Always Contrasty in Hong Kong
So today I had an interesting talk with the lady at the film lab who developed my recent BW films. I told her I noticed some weird colour shifts on all the scans, which was weird. The colour shifts were more obvious when I lower the brightness of the photos. In Capture One, there are colour lines on the histogram of these photos. I told her about this and asked her if the scanner settings might be off. And she immediately turned defensive, and told me it might be my screen’s problem. When I reiterated that the histogram showed colours in Capture One, she just told me nothing was wrong on their end, and maybe I should go to another lab. And that was the end of the conversation. I don’t think I asked too much. Weird.
Anyway, Hong Kong photos again.
I think this lighting is interesting.
This feels like an outdoor movie theatre.
There it is. Thanks for visiting my corner of the internet. See ya!

👏 Nice!
As some others I think have already suggested, you should really do your own scanning, so you're in control of the output. You wouldn't want an important photo to turn out sub-par because a lab f*cked up. 100K file sizes are ridiculous too. Although I have an expensive Epson scanner, I prefer photographing my negs myself. I know some people build their own copy stands to make it super easy.
These contrasty B&Ws are really moody and expressive, I like them!
