Dear Vicky: R.I.P., Mr. Softee
I like eating peanut butter after my nightly runs. I also like oversharing.
Today, I saw on Twitter that Mr. Ho King-Yuen, one of the founders of Hong Kong’s first ice cream truck has died. The brand was established in 1970, and was called Mr. Softee. At the time the ice cream cost half a Hong Kong dollar.
Nowadays, there are a few truck left around town. Ice cream costs 9 Hong Kong dollars a pop, at least that was what I paid the last time I had it. I’d had the ice cream a few times, and it was fine. Nothing to write home about. People mostly pay for the nostalgia these days. I still like seeing it around, and the lo-fi ringtone coming from the speakers never seems to change.
Here’s a photo of one of the trucks in Causeway Bay.
Not a great photo, just nostalgia. See ya!

Love ice cream AND nostalgia. Win/win.
