Penance Post
And The Resurrection of The Invincible Bunny
Yesterday, I had some hardware issues. So I didn’t post as planned. Hence today’s makeup post.
I don’t normally post about cameras and lenses. Today’s an exception.
This post is about the Invincible Bunny(the Chinese nickname for the Canon 5D Mark II.) It is probably one of the most important cameras in the last 20 years. Full frame, full HD video, rock solid, it is a great camera. I got it in 2013, and paired it with a Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.4, the best lens I’ve ever owned.
This pair has been laying in my drawer for a while, and it’s a grave injustice on my part. So I took it out, throw in a CF card, and voila, the Invincible Bunny has risen again!
Today, I took it on a grocery run. I decided to shoot it wide open at f1.4. One of the shortcomings of the lens is the manual focus. I have to rely on the auto focus points on the camera to decide where the focus lands, but by Zeiss’s own document, the method is not reliable at all. Turning the focus ring in different directions may result in the same auto focus point being triggered at different distances. It’s very difficult to nail the focus, especially when the lens is wide open. I used to hate it when I missed the focus, but now I’ve learnt to embrace it. If you can get past this problem, the lens is a beauty. Photos have a 3D look, great fall-off, and gorgeous bokeh. This might be the first time I’ve ever typed the word bokeh.
Anyway, here’s the setup
And here are the photos. These are just random snaps on my grocery run. Nothing fancy.
This is it. Thanks for visiting my corner of Substack. Have a good weekend! See ya!

I heard you're starting a gear review YouTube channel? Lol. Li, I laughed in the coffee shop when I read the never written the word Bokeh before. Great shots, you're right about the fall-off on that planar. Curious. I don't need anything... but I kinda want that.
Brilliant. I went through all of the 5D’s as a professional. I loved the bones of them. Shot many weddings and freelance jobs with a 5D of some description and a 50mm 1.8. A perfect match. Enjoyed your post. Cheers
